Significant Events in the History of Team Survivor Tampa Bay and the Pink Dragon Ladies

 

November 2004 – Moffitt Cancer Center invites female breast cancer survivors to form a dragon boat team for the 2005 Tampa Dragon Boat races.  Coached by member Joan Busenbarrick, the women select the name “Pink Dragon Ladies.”

 

April 23, 2005 – Pink Dragon Ladies make their debut at the Tampa Dragon Boat Race Festival and receive an enthusiastic reception from spectators and dragon boat teams.  From Tampa Bay: Joan Busenbarrick (coach), Melba Campbell, Amanda Carter, Ro Delbene, Carmella DePaola, Kay Deuben,  Linda Fessell, Diana Johnson, Kathy Murphy, Liz O’Connell, Pat Samuels, and Jean Sciortino.  From Gainesville: Michelle Donnelly, Cheryl Garrison, Sally Kimberly, Genne McDonald, Nancy Meffe, Martha Monroe, Cheri Ann Peterson (drummer), and Yaffa Spieler.

 

May 2005 – Joan Busenbarrick and Liz O’Connell team up with relay teams from Team Survivor North Florida to participate in the Danskin Women’s Triathlon in Orlando.

 

June 16, 2005 - Joan Busenbarrick, Linda Fessell, Diana Johnson, Kathy Murphy and Liz O’Connell meet at Ciccio & Tony’s Restaurant to plan for incorporation. The group agrees to affiliate with National Team Survivor (www.teamsurvivor.org) and to open its membership to women with all types of cancers. It is agreed that the first three officers will be: President – Joan, Secretary – Liz, Treasurer – Linda.  Linda’s son Matt Deleo, J.D. is selected to be the Team’s legal agent.

 

July 29, 2005 - Articles of Incorporation are filed with the State. Team Survivor Tampa Bay, Inc. is incorporated as a not for profit 501 (c) 3 corporation.  The Pink Dragon Ladies name is kept for the TSTB dragon boat team.  Website:  http://pinkdragonladies.blogspot.com .

 

September 10, 2005 - Seven members of the Team travel to Lake Lanier, Georgia to compete in the Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races – Joan Busenbarrick, Kay Deuben, Linda Fessell, Joy Mains, Nancy Mefee, Kathy Murphy, Liz O’Connell.  Borrowing from the local BCS team, the Dragon Divas, and the visiting co-ed survivor team from Charleston, TSTB places in the medals and brings home its first trophy, for third place.

 

Nov 12, 2005 – Taping of TV news coverage on Channel 8’s “What’s Right with Tampa Bay” has a featured interview with Joan Busenbarrick.

 

October 2005 - TSTB has an exhibitor table at Moffitt’s FACTors Conference, coordinated by Carol Lee Banks.

 

December 2005 - Team receives first major donation from Dr. Kathryn Kepes ($5,000 for the purchase of a dragon boat).  Donation is matched by Dr. Rand Altemose providing sufficient funds for the Team’s first boat.

 

January 28, 2006 - Team starts using its signature pink paddles.

 

Feb. 4, 2006 – TSTB is awarded tax exempt status by the IRS.

 

March 11, 2006 – Reeves Auto Dealership sponsors a vendor table for the Team at the Women’s Health Forum, Tampa Convention Center.  Table was staffed by K Murphy, CL Banks, L. O’Connell, J. Busenbarrick.

 

April 4, 2006 – Team’s new boat, Dragon Lady, is purchased and delivered. The purple hull is chosen because the color represents all cancers, and it supports the Team’s mission to serve women with all types of cancer.  The Steward’s Foundation donates space in their boathouse for Dragon Lady at the Julian B. Lane Park, 1001 North Boulevard.

 

April 15, 2006 - Launch Party for the Dragon Lady and TV coverage.

April 29, 2006 - Tampa Dragon Boat Race – Florida’s first BCS division and flower ceremony; Script: Liz O’Connell, Narrator: Ro Delbene.  TSTB/PDL takes first place over the visiting Dragon Divas from Atlanta (400m).  The Divas are joined by members of Hope Afloat form Philadelphia.

May 6, 2006 - Team throws Fashion Party at Kathy Murphy’s house, its first fundraising event.

 

May 14, 2006 - Danskin Women’s Triathlon.  J. Busenbarrick, E Gonzalez, M. Semko team up for relay (1:18.55), L. O’Connell and visiting survivor, Rita Oliverio, take on the event individually.

 

June 10, 2006 Steward’s Foundation Learn to Row Day.  TSTB participated in this educational program for the community and took guests out on Dragon Lady to introduce them to the sport.

 

June 11, 2006 Subaru Women’s Triathlon in St. Petersburg – J. Busenbarrick, P. Katz, L. O’Connell participate.  Busenbarrick takes second place in her age group.

 

July 2006 - Team wins first grant and receives a check for $500 from the Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office. Submitted by Carol Lee Banks.

 

August 25-27, 2006 - US National Dragon Boat Racing Championship in Tampa, Team finishes 4th of four BCS teams in four hotly contested races at 250m and 500 m.  Paddlers: CL Banks, C. Beitzel, J. September 9, 2006 - Team travels to Lake Lanier, Georgia for the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival.  Traveling team consists of 13 paddlers and one supporter.  The PDL Team picks up one BCS paddler from the Atlanta Dragon Divas, competes with 14 paddlers against the full Atlanta and Charleston BCS teams, and finishes in second place behind Atlanta in the BCS division (200 m).  The PDLs join Wendy, their lone paddling supporter, and create its first supporter team. With other local volunteers they compete in the recreation division under the name Team Survivor Tampa Bay.  Dr. Kepes, four of her staff, and Harley (canine variety) spend the weekend with the team and cheer them on.   Paddlers: CL Banks, J. March 30, 2007 – Team travels to Tavares, FL for the Central Florida Dragon Boat Race Festival (500 meters).  They are the first survivor team to compete at this event and they are the only all-female team entered.  They finish a respectable 22 out of 28 teams overall, beating 6 co-ed teams.  Heat 1 – 2:52.12, 17th of 28; Heat 2 – 2:53.16, 24th of 28; Heat 3 – 2:58.72, 22nd of 28.  Paddlers: CL Banks, C Beitzel, J. July 28, 2007 - PDLs participate in and lend their boat for the first Tampa DB mini-regatta in Garrison Channel providing informal races for local teams.  Other teams included the TBDBC Bladerunners and the JP Morgan/Chase team.

 

September 8, 2007 - Team travels to Lake Lanier, Georgia for the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival.  This is the first race in which the Team’s cox is a PDL member.  Team finished third in the survivor division behind the co-ed Charleston team and the Atlanta survivor team.  The survivor teams were sponsored by Harrah’s Casino and this is the first Atlanta race festival that hosted a memorial flower ceremony. Traveling team consisted of CL Banks (cox), M. Barrett, J. Busenbarrick (coach), K. Cabble, M. Campbell, B. Corell, K. Deuben, E. Diamond, M. Donnelly, L. Fessell, E. Gonzalez, M. Some PDL members joined with the TBDBC Bladerunner women to form a Tampa women’s team paddling in two races and forfeiting the third due to schedule conflicts with the PDL and Bladerunner teams.

 

September 15, 2007- Team photo is taken for cover of Tampa Bay Breast Cancer Survivor 2008 Calendar (for ACS).  TSTB participation initiated and coordinated by Becky Lloyd.

 

September 16, 2007 – First TSTB Levy Restaurant concession sales at a Buccaneer’s football game at Raymond James Stadium.  Initiated and coordinated by Paula Jennings.

September 28-30, 2007 -- National Team Survivor Leadership Conference hosted by TSTB at Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel, Tampa.  In attendance were National Board members and leader from TS affiliate in Austin, Los Angeles, Madison, Seattle, Marin County, North Florida, Orlando, Boulder, Virginia Beach, New York.  Liz O’Connell served as local coordinator and MC.  Sessions were attended by CL Banks, K. Murphy, B. Lloyd, J. Busenbarrick, and M. Hamilton.  PDL member, Peggie Sherry was the featured speaker on fundraising, and sponsor, Dr. Kathryn Kepes*, was the featured speaker on health issues.  Coach J. Busenbarrick led the group in a dragon boat practice with CL Banks at the helm.  Dinner on Saturday was hosted by K. Murphy at her home.

October 14, 2007 – TV spot on Fox TV broadcast during BC awareness activities at Buccaneer’s game before concession sales.  Initiated and coordinated by Paula Jennings. Interview with Liz O’Connell, Paula Jennings, & Linda Fessell.

November 3, 2007 Congregation Beth Shalom’s “All Jazzed Up” art auction and Temple fund raiser.  Proceeds from “Hats Off” activity were donated to TSTB. A total of $715 was generated from this event.  Recommended by Dr. Kepes and represented by Kathy Murphy and Joan Busenbarrick, TSTB was selected as one of the event’s “charities of choice.”  TSTB provided “re-giftable” items for the basket auction, a DB team building experience auction item, and a hat created by PDL Kay Deuben for the hat exchange.  Event participants: CL Banks, J. In the first round the PDLs finished last with a time of 2:49.10, although technically they beat 3 teams that either disqualified or didn't show up.  In round 2 they beat 8 teams with a time of 2:32.29, and in the finals they beat 5 teams with a time of 2:35.55.  overall, they finished 4 out of 6 in the D Division (lowest) but their time in that heat beat 3 teams in higher divisions (one in the C Division and 2 in the B Division).

 

April 5, 2008 -- Pink Dragon Lady Poker Run.  Participants started their motorcycle run at The Hog Pen and continued on to Uncle Fat’s Pub, The Hawg Pound Pub, Billy Bob’s Beach Bar, and Big Dawg’s Patio.  Gift baskets and a wide variety of donated items were raffled off at the various locations and during Bike Night in Plant City. Coordinated by Verna Nasrallah and Carol Lee Banks.  Gift basket design and preparation: Jo “Mama” Siever.  MC: “Party Patty.”  PDL assistants: J. Busenbarrick, K. Cabble, J. Clarke, C. Hubbard, P. July 19-20, 2008 -- French Dressing Jeans International Dragon Boat Races, Windsor, Canada. Participants: CL Banks, M. Barrett, J. Bossa, J. Busenbarrick, K. Cabble, M. Campbell, J. Clarke, E. Young.  Cox: Lonnie Homenuk.  Drummer: Elaine Emmanuel.  Team placed 5th of 10 teams on Saturday competing with other BCS teams.  The only all female team, the PDLs placed 1st in the D Division on Sunday with over 80 community and corporate teams.  Their final race time was the 7th fastest race time posted that day (2:10.98) and the 4th fastest time in the final round of races.

April 25, 2009 – Corporate-Community World Dragon Boat Race Festival in Miami, PDLs combine with Australian BCS team ____________Gold Coast to finish in third place behind the Island Breast Strokers from Victoria, BC, Canada and Save Our Sisters (SOS) from Miami.

 

May 2, 2009 – Sixth Annual Tampa International Dragon Boat Festival, inauguration of the Carol Lee Cup won by Julie’s Jewels (composite team of GWN trainees).  Save Our Sisters came in second and the PDLs came in third.

 

May 10, 2009 – Danskin Women’s Triathlon at Disney World Orlando, Chris Hubbard and Joy Mains each completed all three legs of the triathlon.

 

Aug. 1, 2009 Sisters at Heart Celebration, Burlington, VT – A paddling workshop and day of celebration for breast cancer survivor dragon boaters.

Aug. 8, 2009 – Athletes Who Care Triathlon in Land O’ Lakes, FL, Liz O’Connell complete all three legs of the triathlon.

 

Sept. 5, 2009 – Trek Women’s Triathlon at Disney World, Orlando.  TSTB sent 3 relay teams: Kathy Cabble, Chris Hubbard, Joanne Bossa; Young, Grunebach, Velez; O’Connell, Semko, Gonzalez (3rd of 8 survivor relays)
